Selection of Mary Stephens' Blue Porcelain Tableware
I’m an artist, potter and Yoga teacher. I studied Fine Art Sculpture at Bretton Hall (College of Leeds University). On returning home to Herefordshire from university I trained as an apprentice potter to Jonathan and Melaine Hughes-Jones at Pembridge Terracotta.
I came back to creating work about six years ago and work from a small studio in North Herefordshire. I love working in clay either on the wheel or hand building. I feel very lucky to be able to combine working with clay, making and creating, with teaching yoga. They both benefit and feed into each other.
Each of these pieces is a one off original - hand made by pinching out clay and sculpting. They are all stoneware except for the yoga posed piece which is porcelain. The wings are paper and fabric. The smoke firing process involves the sculpture being fired then put into a container of sawdust which is lit and left to smouldering over night, leaving unique smoke patterns on the final piece. I like the unpredictable nature of this way of finishing a piece. The process can also mean work may break so it’s always a joy to open the container to see not only the patterns the smoke has left, but that the piece is still intact.
