Rebecca Finney
Rooted in art, culture and rural life; I explore picture making through depictions of landscape, aerial views and plants whilst contemplating our relationship with land, environment and a sense of place.
These paintings are from a series of aerial views of land around Kington. I enjoy the way the aerial viewpoint shifts the perception of a landscape familiar as vistas and views by making more apparent the land’s form and uses.
Process: Following routes familiar to me on the OS Explorer map (1:25000), I use a scaled viewfinder to find compositions that include historical, political, agricultural & autobiographical elements; whilst seeking dynamic lines and shapes that will form a good structure for a picture. I scale up the substructure, making a skeleton drawing at 1:2500, adding details observed on satellite images until I have a composition I am happy with. The drawing is transferred to canvas and the painting process starts. The paint is built up in successions of layers, mimicking the accretive process apparent in the land.
